The Gonstead Technique

Experience the Gonstead Difference!

There are hundreds of different ways to "do chiropractic". The Gonstead technique is one of those ways! Less than 2% of chiropractors in Minnesota are trained in the Gonstead technique. Because of the high specificity of the analysis and adjustment, your body will heal faster with a chiropractor trained in the Gonstead technique. What makes the Gonstead technique different from other chiropractic forms, is that there are 5 steps involved before each adjustment, and they are utilized at every visit to give you top tier chiropractic care.

  • Step 1. Visualization: I will briefly inspect your back for anything abnormal. Swelling, pimple clusters, redness, tight muscles, moles, skin texture changes, moles, spinal curvatures, uneven shoulders, or skin discolorations are very common when there is nerve irritation and give clues as to the general area of the spine that needs attention.

  • Step 2. Instrumentation: I use a temperature differential instrument that measures each spinal nerve on both sides of the spine called a nervoscope (see picture below). When the probes of the scope are glided down the spine, the instrument will pick up if there is any type of abnormal heat being produced by an inflamed nerve from a subluxation. Leading me to investigate the area further and utilize steps 3 and 4 below.

  • Step 3. Static palpation: Static means still, or not moving. Chiropractors feel with our hands to confirm what our eyes have seen, and we feel with our hands for any swelling or edema. Where the swelling is, there is an inflamed and irritated nerve that needs attention.

  • Step 4. Motion palpation: After confirming which bone and nerve is the culprit with the nervoscope, and feeling for swelling with static palpation, the area of interest is found, and the subluxated vertebra is determined. The vertebra is then felt in small and minute motions  to determine exactly which direction the bone is stuck. If this step is overlooked, it may not effectively fix the problem.

  • Step 5. X-Rays: Full-spine x-rays are taken on everyone (unless pregnant). "To see is to know, and to not know is it guess." Taking x-rays of the spine leaves no room for guessing. The x-ray tells the story of your spine. It will show natural or missing curves, degeneration, details about posture, and confirm step 4 by showing an actual picture of the direction the vertebra is in. Your spine is like a snowflake: it is unique, and you will not find one other spine that looks the same as yours!
