TMJ Disorder
5-12% of the population experience TMJ pain. It is a painful, and frustrating ailment to deal with. Luckily, at Restoration Chiropractic, TMJ and jaw disorders are my specialty.
What is a TMJ Disorder?
TMJ disorder, or Temporomandibular Joint Disorder, is a disorder of the Temporomandibular joint, or “jaw” joint. TMJ disorder can include pain, teeth grinding, jaw clicking or popping, or headaches that stem from the jaw joint.
The upper neck in the spine is closely associated with the jaw and makes up most of the ability to rotate our head. In a normal alignment of the neck, jaw, and spine, the head will effortlessly rotate side to side with no friction or pain. Normally the jaw glides back and forth as we rotate our head left and right. Both sides of the jaw should open and close symmetrically and effortlessly. If there is a disruption in this intricate relationship between the head, neck, and jaw... pain, clicking, popping, or grinding at the jaw, or headaches may occur.
Notice how close the TMJ joint is to the upper neck. TMJ disorder is frequent with upper neck subluxations. A chiropractic spinal assessment will be performed before looking exclusively at the jaw to rule out the root cause in the spine, as many times this is overlooked.
