The upper neck in the spine is closely associated with the jaw. The upper neck makes up most of the ability to rotate our head. In a normal alignment of the neck, jaw, and spine, the head will effortlessly rotate side to side with no friction or pain. The jaw slides back and forth as we rotate our head left and right and this is normal. Both sides of the jaw should open and close symmetrically and effortlessly. If there is a disruption in this intricate relationship between the head, neck, and jaw, pain, clicking, popping, or grinding may occur at the TMJ or headaches may occur.

To treat TMJ disorders, a careful examination of the spine and neck must be performed. The exact position of the correct vertebral segment must be considered, and adjusted to restore proper biomechanics and nerve function of the head, neck, and jaw.
