Chiropractic 101

What is Chiropractic and what’s so special about the spine? Let’s dig into it!

The human spine has 26 bones: 7 cervical (neck), 12 thoracic (middle back), 5 lumber (low

back), 1 sacrum (tailbone), and 1 coccyx (low tail bone). Sandwiched between most of these bones are joints and cartilage tissue called intervertebral discs. These discs give us freedom to move around and bend. Without discs, our backs would be stuck like tree trunks! Luckily this is not the case and we are free to move. Not only does the spine allow for movement, but it also houses the spinal cord: The thick cable that connects the brain to the rest of the body.

The spinal cord splits into 31 pairs of spinal nerves which emerge out from between each bone in the spine right at the level of each disc. These spinal nerves branch out and touch every living cell in your body. They go to your limbs, organs, and muscles. The spinal cord is the highway carrying signals from the brain to the rest of your body. For example, when the brain decides it’s time to digest food, the brain creates a signal to digest the food, and that signal flows from the brain, down the spinal cord, through the spinal nerves, and all the way to the cells of the digestive tract. That signal tells those cells to secrete enzymes and contract/relax to digest and move food along through your system. Not only does the brain talk to your body’s cells, but your body’s cells talk back to the brain! This allows your brain to monitor everything that is going on in your body due to the spinal cord acting similar to a two way highway.

This is how your body communicates with itself. Through the nervous system! If the nervous system is communicating properly, the body is naturally at ease.

What happens if the signals cannot get to and from the brain to the rest of the body?

If signals cannot properly get to and from the brain, that is an issue. Communication gets disrupted between body cells and the brain, and things like back or neck pain, poor digestion, tight muscles, dizziness, numbness, weakness, headaches, menstrual problems, hormone imbalance, bad posture, knee pain, more stress, or sciatica may start to show up as a warning that there is an interference in the communication pathway. These are all considered symptoms, and when symptoms start showing up, the body is no longer healthy or at ease, but the body is now in a dis-ease state. If there is an interference in the communication of a single spinal nerve, whatever that nerve touches will be affected.

Can you fix the communication disruption or interference in your nervous system?

Yes! The problem can be corrected, and that is where chiropractic comes in. Chiropractors are trained to look at the spine where interference in the nervous system is most likely to happen. Many times the interference is found right at the spine where a swollen disc is pushing on a spinal nerve . At Restoration Chiropractic, a thorough exam is performed, x-rays of the whole spine are taken, and a temperature tool to measure nerve heat are all used in conjunction to find exactly where the problem in your nervous system is. When the chiropractor has found where the interference in the nervous system is, which is usually found at a specific level of the spine, they will make an “adjustment” to the spine to remove the interference and restore the communication to and from the brain. Once the interference is gone, your body will be able to function properly since the communication between the brain and cells of the body is restored.
